Robert John Downey Jr. was born in Manhattan, New York City, on April 4, 1965. He is the younger of two children. He had an actor father named Robert Downey Sr. and an actress mother named Elsie Ann who was in Downey Sr.’s films.
The father of Downey was half Lithuanian Jewish, one-quarter Hungarian Jewish, and one-quarter Irish. The mother of Downey was Scottish, English, German, and Swiss German. He grew up in Greenwich Village with his sister Allyson.
A future career
Downey grew up “surrounded by drugs.” Downey’s drug-addicted father let him use marijuana when he was six years old, which his father later said he felt bad about. After ward, Downey said that drug use became a way for him and his father to connect emotionally.
“When my dad and I would do drugs together, it was like he was trying to show his love for me in the only way he knew how.” At some point, Downey started abusing alcohol and “making a thousand phone calls in pursuit of drugs” every night.
1983–1995: Early work and honours from critics
Downey began to build on his theatre roles. In 1983, Norman Lear produced the short-lived off-Broadway musical American Passion at the Joyce Theatre. When he joined the new, younger cast of Saturday Night Live in 1985, the show had low ratings and was criticised for the comedic skills of the new cast.
After a year, he and most of the new crew were fired and replaced. “The Downey Fail sums up everything that makes SNL great,” Rolling Stone magazine said of Downey as the worst cast member in the show’s history. Personal life
After meeting Sarah Jessica Parker on the set of Firstborn in 1984, Downey began dating her. They later broke up in 1991 because he was addicted to drugs. They were together for 42 days before they got married on May 29, 1992. Deborah Falconer was an actress and singer.
In September 1993, they had a son. Downey’s repeated trips to rehab and jail finally put a strain on their marriage. In 2001, during Downey’s most recent arrest and sentencing to a long stay in rehab, Falconer broke up with Downey and took their son with her. As of April 26, 2004, Downey and Falconer were no longer married.
