The Eagles Band: A Guide to Their Iconic Sound: The American group was formed in Los Angeles in 1971. Their hits are still popular today, even though the sound of country and soft rock was changing at the time.

Who are the Eagles?
- Glenn Frey, Don Henley (drums and vocals), Bernie Leadon (guitars and vocals), and Randy Meisner (bass guitar and vocals) were the first members.
- Timothy B. Schmit took over for Meisner when he left the band in 1977.
- Don Felder joined the band in 1974, but in 2001 he was fired. Joe Walsh has been in the band since 1975.
- Frey died in January 2016, but the Eagles kept playing for a year afterward. His son Deacon Frey and Vince Gill took turns singing lead on Frey’s songs.
How did the Eagles form?
- In early 1971, singer Linda Ronstadt and her manager John Boylan looked for local musicians Glenn Frey and Don Henley to join her band.
- Henley moved from Texas to Los Angeles with his band Shiloh to record an album with Kenny Rogers. Frey, on the other hand, formed Longbranch Pennywhistle and came from Michigan.
- They met at The Troubadour in Los Angeles in 1970 and became friends through Amos Records, the record label they both worked for.
- Randy Meisner used to play in Ricky Nelson’s backing band and then joined Ronstadt’s band for her summer tour.
- Frey and Henley decided to start a band together while they were on tour and told Ronstadt about their plans. Meisner and Bernie Leadon, who was also in the backing band, joined them to make a group.
Only once did these four play live together behind Ronstadt, at Disneyland. However, they were all on her self-titled album. In 1971, they signed with Asylum Records and played their first show as Teen King and the Emergencies in October of that year.
Why did they choose Eagles as their band name?
- A trip to the Mojave Desert with peyote and tequila gave the band members the idea for their name.
- For Don Felder, Leadon came up with the name when he remembered reading about how much the Hopis loved eagles. For JD Souther, the idea came when Frey yelled “Eagles!” when they saw eagles flying above them.
- Comic Book In his autobiography, friend of the band Steve Martin wrote that he thought they should be called “the Eagles.” But Frey has said that the group’s name is just “Eagles,” with no “the.”

Why did they split up and how did they reunite?
It has been called the “Long Night at Wrong Beach” since the fight that happened on July 31, 1980. Felder and Frey got angry with each other before the show when Felder told the wife of California Senator Alan Cranston, “You’re welcome—I guess” when the senator thanked the band backstage for playing a benefit.
During the whole show, Frey and Felder talked about how they were going to beat each other up behind the scenes. Frey told Felder, “Only three more songs until I kick your ass, pal.” Eagles Live turned out to be the band’s last album for a long time, as Frey wouldn’t talk to the other members. The liner notes for the album only said “Thank you and goodnight.”
They didn’t get back together until 1994. “Just so you know, we never broke up; we just took a 14-year break,” Frey said at their first live show in April of that year. A live album called Hell Freezes Over was released during the tour. The name comes from Henley’s comment that the band would get back together “when hell freezes over.”
